What is social marketing?

Here’s the question for the week – “What is social marketing?”.

Social marketing uses the same marketing principles used to sell products to consumers as a way to change ideas, behaviors and attitudes and benefit society. An example of social marketing in action is the work done by to end smoking. Social marketing was created in the 1970s by Philip Kotler and Gerald Zaltman. Now social marketing is being used to get consumers to behave in a green way and help end global warming. There is an interesting story about this on NPR today. Go here to read the article and listen to the story.
