Behind the Shoot- Interviews for The Coordinating Center

The Coordinating Center, a non-profit organization based in Millersville, MD, approached us about conducting some video interviews. Their goal was to create an introductory video for newcomers, showcasing experienced members’ dedication, motivation, and team cohesion.

Before the shooting day, members of TCA and The Coordinating Center worked on the most relevant questions to ask the four people filmed. We always make the decision to ask more, just in case we need extra content. A second round usually results in a waste of time and effort. So, the better the plan is, the nicer the results!

On the day of the shoot, our team located four interesting spots for the shots — one for each person. Changing locations several times during the same shot implies a rather light setup, to avoid mobilizing the people interviewed for too long. Every time we move, I need to find the best frame, set-up the lights, adjust camera settings and make at least one test with a teammate before shooting. The choice was made to light the scene with two soft boxes, in addition to natural lighting. The shooting was done with a Panasonic S5, with a lens equivalent to 50mm. The rendering is very close to human vision, therefore both simple and realistic.

The final edit is still in progress, it will mix interview shots, stock footage, still images and motion graphics. Regarding the interview shots, the main post-production step was the color grading to correct the white balance and fine-tune the exposure, but also to give a more vibrant tone to the entire color spectrum. The overall art direction for this project was to keep a natural look rather than an overproduced result, because their domain is all about human connection.
