The 2016 Summer Olympics are here. And although most of us will not be in Rio to watch the Games live, social media will make us feel like we are there. The prevalence of second screens will make the upcoming 2016 Summer Olympics the most watched and talked-about Games on social media yet. Just think about it, since the last Olympics, the popularity of Twitter, Snapchat, Facebook Live and Periscope has sky rocketed. And these networks are going to have a huge impact.

- According to Social Times, 76% of the world’s population is expected to tune in on TV. Of those 3.6 billion global viewers, 85% will be on additional devices while watching the Games.
- The International Olympic Committee estimates that its 33.9 million social media followers will generate over 2 billion impressions across Facebook, Twitter and Instagram.
Ana Carolina Addobbati, Coordinator of International Relations with Asian National Olympic Committees with RIO 2016, was interviewed about the importance of social media platforms during this year’s Olympic Games. She explained that social media will be their main avenue for engaging diverse audiences. She hopes that social media will allow for a synchronized and sustainable flow of information with different channels of media around the globe.
