Tips for Video Search Engine Optimization (SEO)

The world of video marketing is constantly evolving and becoming very prominent in the industry. Video search engine optimization is essential in order to give your video a higher chance of ranking on search engines. This will also help ensure your videos are reaching your target audience. Today, we see videos on every platform we scroll and higher ranks are more difficult with universal searching. There are many strategies that you can use to optimize your own videos and drive traffic.

1. Video Title and Descriptions

Just like any blog post, keep your video title concise and to the point. Using keywords would be best practice, so using them in both the title and in the video description, it would ensure that it ranks higher in search results. Make sure the description is just an expansion of the title. More detail that it gives the viewer more information on what this specific video covers.

2. Engaging Thumbnail

Having a thumbnail that visualizes the subject of your video is incredibly helpful. People put a lot of trust on imagery and if they see a video thumbnail showcasing exactly what they’re looking for, it drives traffic to the video. In platforms like Youtube, you will receive a few thumbnail options that are auto-generated. But you’re also capable of uploading your own photo thumbnail if none of the ones provided are suitable. They say never judge a book by it’s cover, however a video thumbnail is its “cover” and people certainly place heavy consideration on a thumbnail when searching for the right video.

3. Add Video Transcripts

Not only does this make the video more accessible to a wider audience, it allows people to be able to engage with your video when they happen to scroll upon it but they either don’t want to or cannot have sound or volume on.

4. Keep Your Video Short

This is the same concept as copy on an ad. You shouldn’t expect anyone to watch a video over 3-5 minutes if it’s not something particularly instructional. People’s attention spans tend to be short and information needs to be relayed quickly. If there is over a half hour of content, these should be strategized into smaller clips of a series.

5. Engage and Share

Once your video is ready for the world to see, post on any relevant platform. Share the link, and post about it. Make sure you use hashtags with keywords when possible. Encourage engagement on the comments section.

Video is a great medium to use in order to increase traffic to your site or page, extending reach to target audiences. Utilizing these video SEO tips will help put your video at higher ranks in search engines.
