Monday Night Football by the Ads

During a recent Monday morning at work, a few coworkers and I exchanged the typical post-weekend water cooler/coffee maker/fridge talk about how we spent our Saturday and Sunday. When I told them that I’d spent a lot of time watching college and professional football, one asked how I could stand watching broadcasts that are about 50% commercials, the vast majority of which are for food, beer, and cars.

For starters, I said, I actually like being exposed to some ads in my weekly media consumption diet but come pretty darn close to avoiding them entirely when watching any of my dozens of shows via my DVR, Showtime Anytime, HBO GO, and Netflix. So, even if my coworker’s 50% commercials assertion was right, I appreciate the fact that my eyeballs get counted in some sports broadcasts’ Nielsen numbers.

Now as for the content of these commercials, I protested that a typical football game’s ad content surely consists of more diversity than one might assume. So my pugnacious peer came back with the best retort in the history of playgrounds across the nation: “Prove it.”

Thus challenged, I decided that I’d put my how-did-I-ever-live-without-it DVR to use (very ironically, employing it to record and consciously watch commercials as opposed to fast-forward through them) and do a deep dive into that night’s Monday Night Football game on ESPN.

After subjecting myself to a three hour and 20 minute broadcast (from kickoff to 0:00 on the clock), including just 60 minutes of football, I found that it consisted of almost as many commercials (112) as plays (123) and more independent ad blocks (21) than points scored by either the Vikings (20) or the Bears (17).

As for content, this amazingly awesome pie chart proves that I was 100% right: A mere 48.2% of the ads (not accounting for their length of course) were for food, beverage, and cars!

And as the list below, which includes every ad aired within the broadcast, also proves, I need to get a hobby.

Or maybe a girlfriend.
