Three Branding Lessons We Can Learn from Game of Thrones Characters

Lesson 1: Stay True to Brand Values— Be Consistent

John Snow

John Snow is forthright, honest and always acting in the best interests of his followers. When Cersei Lannister agrees to an armistice between her forces and Daenerys Targaryen’s, she has one condition: that Jon not take sides in the impending war. John explains that he can’t serve two queens and won’t make an oath he can’t keep. While potentially disastrous, we have come to expect these loyal, upstanding actions from John.

People value brands that have integrity. Once you’ve determined your brand’s values and personality, ensure that your content consistently follows that voice and communicates what you stand for.

Lesson 2: Reward Brand Loyalty

Daenerys Targaryen

Daenerys is a queen who recognizes and rewards loyalty (even if she sets fire to those who oppose her). A prime example? Missandei. Initially a gift to Daenerys, Missandei served as a translator for the Queen. After setting her free, Missandei chose to serve Daenerys of her own free will. Daenerys rewarded her with a position as an informal advisor and has remained trusted counsel ever since.

Recognizing and rewarding avid consumers allows you to create brand ambassadors. This group of people will share their positive experiences with others and magnify your efforts to spread the word.

Lesson 3: Create Meaningful Partnerships— Collaboration is Key

Littlefinger and Lady Olenna Tyrell

When Lady Olenna concluded that King Joffrey was a lunatic and therefore unsuitable to marry her granddaughter Margaery, she sprung in to action. Knowing she wouldn’t be able to bring down the King herself, she collaborated with Petyr “Littlefinger” Baelish in a plot to poison Joffrey at his own wedding.

The company you keep reflects on your brand. Partnering with companies whose values are aligned with your own allows you to broaden your exposure and, potentially, strengthen your offerings and position in the marketplace.
